Governing: Facing intense pressure -- including from state and local officials of his own party -- President Trump signed an executive order on Wednesday that ends the practice of separating children from their families at the border.
The executive order won't end the so-called zero tolerance policy, announced in April, that leads to criminal referrals of all people caught in the country illegally. But it will allow families to stay together during periods of detention. Under the Obama administration, families were usually referred for civil deportation proceedings, not requiring separation.
