What is a RIF? A federal worker’s guide to the Trump budget

The Washington Post: President Trump’s budget proposal raises the prospect of massive layoffs across the federal government. While his proposals must be approved by Congress, the magnitude of the proposed cuts has put the dreaded acronym RIF — otherwise known as reduction in force — back in the Washington vocabulary.

We asked our resident federal workforce guru, staff writer Eric Yoder, to explain some of the complex personnel terms and issues federal employees may face in the coming months as agencies deal with deep, proposed cuts.
