The Washington Post: The old civil service exam was introduced in 1955, a proctored, pencil-and-paper test that thousands of Americans took each year to get federal jobs. It was called the Federal Service Entrance Examination. A brochure called “Futures in the Federal Government” opened with these words: “Wanted: People of Promise” and urged Americans to take the exam. Starting salaries were listed at $4,040.
