Homeland Security Today: In 2012, there were 8,577 terrorist attacks that killed 15,843 individuals, which was a significant 69 percent escalation in attacks and an 89 percent increase in fatalities over the slightly more than 5,000 attacks that were carried out in 2011 that killed 8,154 persons, according to "preliminary" data from the Global Terrorism Database (GTD) managed by the University of Maryland-based National Consortium for the Study of Terrorism and Responses to Terrorism (START).
