Expanded availability of federal data could spur new entrepreneurial ventures

Government Security News: Recognizing that the free availability of various chunks of federal government data can spur the development of new, job-producing entrepreneurial ventures -- just as the availability of government weather data spawned weather newscasts and warning systems; and the availability of GPS data inspired the development of navigation systems and location-based software applications -- President Obama issued an executive order on May 9 pledging that the government’s new “default position” is to make its data “open” and “machine-readable.”
