OLYMPIA -- Washington Gov. Jay Inslee has signed a measure that requires school districts to work with local law enforcement to develop an enhanced emergency response system.
Inslee signed the bill Tuesday. Under the measure, districts must submit a progress report by Dec. 1, 2014, and must consider installing additional security features when building new schools, and consider installing perimeter security.
The School Safety Advisory Committee must submit a report by this December on policies on emergency response for various scenarios. Grants to install the emergency response systems would be issued by the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction.
Sen. Bruce Dammeier, R-Puyallup, said he introduced Senate Bill 5197 in response to the December elementary school shooting in Newtown, Conn.
