USA Today: ALBANY, N.Y. — Schools in New York may soon have to start testing for lead in drinking water.
The state Legislature passed the measure early Saturday morning to respond to nearly 100 schools in New York that recently tested positive for the dangerous chemical in drinking water.
"Given that many of our area schools are located in aging buildings, it's important that we make sure the water is safe,” Assemblywoman Donna Lupardo, D-Endwell, Broome County, who sponsored the measure, said in a statement. "This bill will ensure that testing is conducted, problems are remediated, and results and plans are made public."
