What Open Source Technology Can and Can’t Do to Fix Elections

IEEE Spectrum: Los Angeles voters in last month’s primary election found themselves in a familiar situation: stuck in traffic. But they weren’t in the comfort of their cars on the freeway. Instead, due to mishaps with new ballot-marking devices, some voters stood in line for more than 2 hours and others didn’t get to vote at all.

Los Angeles County is one of a growing number of public authorities testing open source components for voting systems.
