The Hill: Although various bills have been introduced in Congress regarding data breach notification, as 2015 draws to a close, Congress is seemingly no closer to passing a comprehensive federal data breach notification law. By contrast, there has been significant legislative activity at the state level in 2015 on this topic. Connecticut, Montana, Nevada, New Hampshire, North Dakota, Oregon, Rhode Island, Washington, Wyoming and, most recently, California have all revised their data breach notification statutes in the past year. Unlike Congress, the states have been actively taking steps to protect their residents in response to the recent surge in high profile data breaches.
