Government Health IT: Enormous changes are ahead for Medicaid programs, driven by new mandates from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), the evolving Medicaid Information Technology Architecture (MITA) standards, and a national shift toward managed care. One of the more important changes is the looming end of the traditional Medicaid Management Information Systems (MMIS).
The days of spending tens, and sometimes hundreds, of millions of dollars and multiple years implementing monolithic MMIS are over. In their place is a movement towards a modularization of the Medicaid enterprise, which favors using sets of packaged, functional business processes ("modules") implemented through services, software, data and interoperable interfaces, to create its systems. These modules have unique system functionality for a single purpose; are discrete, scalable and reusable; and are relatively independent of other application modules.
