One Big Issue the HIPAA Omnibus Rule Doesn’t Address

Healthcare Informatics: Since the updated version of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) went into effect on Sept. 23, providers have been busy prioritizing compliance activities, understanding the breach notification rule and patients’ rights, and following new requirements related to business associates. With so many moving parts, you would be forgiven for thinking that the Department of Health & Human Services has covered all the possible topics related to privacy and security in this Omnibus Rule. But in fact there is one key area still to be addressed and that involves a patient’s right to an "accounting of disclosures” of their health information.
