Smithfield hog biogas ambitions ‘a big step forward’ on climate action

Energy News Network: When Smithfield Foods announced a plan last week to cover and capture gas from thousands of its hog manure pits, most news reports linked it to mounting lawsuits from neighbors fed up with odor and other nuisances caused by the company’s factory-scale farms.

Yet Smithfield, the world’s largest pork producer, says its massive biogas venture in North Carolina, Missouri and Utah is driven not by growing legal pressure, but by a commitment to reduce its climate footprint and create a new stream of revenue.
