Utility Dive: The centerpiece of the settlement is a controlled experiment conducted to answer the question: If PPL installs communication interfaces and related software that essentially allow it to remotely control the voltage of customer-owned DERs, among other uses, will the potential reliability benefits be great enough to justify the costs? Or, as parties on the other side of the settlement have suggested, is new inverter technology with autonomous features "smart" enough to handle grid reliability concerns by itself?
The three-year pilot, to start Jan. 1, 2021, under the terms of the settlement, will follow several groups of customers with DERs.
