Burlington Free Press: MONTPELIER - Gov. Phil Scott called for strict limits on local school spending in his first budget proposal, a measure his administration says would save about $30 million, hold property taxes level and allow the state to increase investments in early education and higher education.
The Republican governor called for the local school budget freeze while laying out a level state general fund budget on Tuesday afternoon.
"I'm not asking school districts for anything more than what I've asked from state government," Scott said at a joint session of the House of Representatives and Senate. "We will be tightening our belts in Montpelier and rethinking every program and service at every level."
