Clunkers spree comes to close with almost 700,000 takers

The Wall Street Journal:  SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- The cash-for-clunkers program drew to a close late Tuesday, with almost 700,000 participants grabbing $2.88 billion in rebates to trade their old rides for more fuel-friendly alternatives.

The promotion lifted economic growth in the third quarter by up to 0.4 percentage points at an annual rate and will continue to boost GDP in the fourth quarter as automakers ramp up production to replace depleted inventories, according to the Department of Transportation. Read Article
